When selecting a scientific journal to publish an article, scientists often encounter such a concept as quartile. A quartile (Q) is an indicator that is used to assess the level of a scientific journal within a particular scientific field. Why is the quartile so important when choosing a journal and what do Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 mean? Let's find out in today's review.

Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4: what do these journal categories mean?
Quartile is a category into which a scientific journal falls depending on its place in the overall ranking of publications in a particular field of knowledge. The ranking of journals in each subject category is divided into quartiles based on Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and SCImago Journal Ranking (SJR). The quartiles rank journals from the highest to the lowest position in a scientific field.
All journals indexed in international databases such as Scopus or Web of Science are divided into four groups:

- Q1 (first quartile) — the most prestigious and highly ranked journals that are in the top 25% of the best scientific publications
- Q2 (second quartile) — quality journals that fall within the range of top 25% to 50% of the best scientific publications
- Q3 (third quartile) — journals of average level in terms of citation and influence in their scientific field
- Q4 (fourth quartile) — publications with the lowest indicators, which are included in the bottom 25% of the list.
How is a journal's quartile determined?
Quartile of a journal is calculated on the basis of such scientometric indicators as Impact Factor in Web of Science and SJR in Scopus. These indicators reflect the frequency of citations of articles published in the journal during a certain period.
The higher the Impact Factor and SJR, the more likely it is that the journal will be in the "top league" categories — Q1 or Q2. However, the distribution of journals into quartiles depends not only on citations, but also on comparative analysis with other journals in the same subject area.
Why is the quartile of a journal in Scopus and Web of Science important for scientists?
Publishing in Scopus and Web of Science Q1,Q2 journals provides many benefits to a scientist:
- increased scientific reputation: publications in Q1,Q2 journals are considered prestigious and increase a researcher's credibility
- career impact: journal rank is often critical when considering candidates for academic positions
- academic degrees and titles: successful defense of a dissertation requires publications in journals indexed in the international databases Scopus and WoS. At the same time, publications in publications with high quartile significantly increase the chances of being awarded a scientific degree or title
- attracting funding: various sponsoring organizations take into account the quartile of the journals in which the applicant publishes, which can influence the decision to provide financial support.
- increasing the impact and visibility of a scientist's publications: articles in highly ranked Scopus Q1, Q2 journals and Web of Science first and second quartile journals are more likely to be cited, which increases the scientific significance of the author's work.
How do I find logs Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4?
To find out which quarter a journal belongs to, you can use these resources:
Scopus Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 journals
The Scimago Journal & Country Rank platform provides information on quartiles of journals indexed by Scopus. This resource provides a user-friendly interface for searching journals by various categories such as subject area, country of publication, and the ability to select reporting for a particular year.
Web of Science Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 journals
The annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR) report provides you with information about journals indexed in WoS. The report provides key metrics, including impact factor, JIF5Years and quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4). JCR allows you to compare journals, analyze their rankings in different disciplines and select a publication that meets your scientific goals.
