The IMRAD structure is an international standard for structuring scientific articles. This format allows for an orderly presentation of scientific text and makes it easier for readers to understand. IMRAD has four main sections: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. These are the ones that will be discussed in this paper.

What is the IMRAD structure?
IMRAD is an internationally recognised standard used to structure scientific articles. Based on the principles of the scientific method, this format includes formulating hypotheses, conducting experiments, analysing the data obtained, and drawing conclusions.
The name IMRAD is an acronym that consists of the first letters of the main sections of the paper:
- I — introduction
- M — methods
- R — results
- D — discussion
1. Introduction. In this section, the author formulates the research problem, explains its relevance, and outlines the objectives. The introduction should not be overloaded with information. It is enough to indicate what gap in the researched area the research paper fills. The introduction should provide an overview of the research topic, formulate the research question or hypothesis and justify the significance of the research paper by clearly defining the aims and objectives.
2. Methods. This section describes in detail the research methodology, the materials and instruments used, and the data collection process. An unclear or insufficiently detailed description of methods can significantly reduce the credibility of your study. A clear and detailed description of the methodology allows other scientists to replicate the experiment, assess the validity of the results, and be convinced of the validity of your conclusions. Without it, the work may appear to be insufficiently justified, which would call into question its scientific value.
3. Results. This section is crucial because it is the data presented that confirms the scientific significance of your research. Reviewers are primarily evaluating the results, so it is important to present them in a clear and structured manner.
It is best to present the results in the form of tables, graphs or figures, which makes them easier to understand. However, it is important to remember that this section is only intended to demonstrate the findings, not to interpret them. Analysis and discussion should be placed in the next section. Clear wording, logical sequencing, and the use of visuals increase the likelihood of a successful review.
4. Discussion. In this section, the authors analyse the results obtained, compare them with previous studies and indicate what contribution has been made to a particular field of science. The Discussion section may address possible limitations and prospects for further research.
Why is the IMRAD structure important for scientific articles?
- Simplifying the perception of scientific information. The IMRAD structure makes it easier for readers and reviewers to understand and evaluate scientific work. This format helps scientists present their research results in a logical and coherent manner, which makes information easier to comprehend and accelerates the dissemination of scientific knowledge.
- International standardisation. IMRAD is an international standard for the organisation of scientific articles, especially in the natural and medical sciences. Most peer-reviewed scientific publications indexed by the international databases Scopus and Web of Science require adherence to this structure for writing scientific articles.
- Ensuring transparency of research. Detailing methods and results makes research more open and reproducible, which is a key principle of science.
- Making it easier to analyse and compare studies. A single structure makes it easier for scientists to analyse studies and find relationships between them.
